Black Tourmaline History

Tourmaline is a crystalline silicate mineral group with elements such as aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, also known as Schrol. This semi-precious gemstone comes in a variety of colors. Tourmaline has pyroelectric properties, which has been proven by its ability to attract and then repel hot ashes. Pyro Electricity is a property of certain crystals which are naturally electrically polarized and as a result contain large electric fields.
Pyroelectricity is the ability of a certain material to generate a temporary voltage when they are heated or cooled. Rutile Quartz, also known as rutilated quartz, is a variety of quartz that contains rutile inclusions. This fascinating semi-precious gemstone displays a unique needle-like inclusions of rutile within the crystal structure. The small rutile needles represented in the Rutile Quartz crystal cause the optic phenomenon called asterism, a star-shaped concentration of light reflected or refracted from crystals, gemstones and semi-precious gemstones. This happens when a suitable stone is cut and polished. Asteriated gems are also referred to as “star” gems. Rutile is a mineral composed primarily of titanium dioxide and Quartz.

Rutile has one of the highest refractive indices at visible wavelengths of any known crystal. This means that it can bend and refract light at a greater angle than any other known material. This ability allows the creation of lenses and prisms. Rutile has the ability to split direct light into two separate beams, each traveling at a different speed and direction. It has the property of dispersion, which is the ability to split “white” light into its constituent colors, violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. 

Rutile is being used as a pigment in paint, plastic, paper, foods and everything else that requires a bright white color. Nanoscale particles of Rutile are transparent in direct light but are highly effective in the absorption of ultraviolet radiation, which is being used in sunscreens.
